Kathmandu: In the dramatic unfolding of events, CPN-UML leader Shankar Pokharel has been reappointed Chief Minister of Lumbini Province on Sunday.
Province Chief Dharmanath Yadav appointed Pokharel to the post.
“Pokharel, the leader of the UML Lumbini Parliamentary Party, has been appointed as the Chief Minister in accordance with Article 168 (1) of the Constitution of Nepal,” reads the statement issued by the Office of Province Chief.
Earlier today, Pokharel has resigned before the Province Assembly meeting starts deliberations on a no-confidence motion filed against him.
CPN-UML, Lumbini Province had re-proposed Pokharel as the candidate for Chief Minister from the party.
A meeting of the party parliamentary party held in Butwal had agreed to propose party Standing Committee member Pokharel again as the Chief Minister.
The 81-member Lumbini Province Assembly has 41 members from the UML, 19 from the Nepali Congress, 17 from the CPN (Maoist Center), two from the Janata Samajbadi Party, and one from the Janamorcha Nepal.
CPN-UML, Lumbini Province had re-proposed Pokharel as the candidate for Chief Minister from the party.
It should be noted that lawmaker Bimala Kumari Khatri had announced entering CPN (Maoist Center).
Opposition parties had handed over signatures to Province Chief Yadav saying that the UML does not have a single majority to form a government.
UML lawmaker resigns
Meanwhile, a UML lawmaker has resigned while two others have said that they don’t support Pokharel as Chief Minister.
Dugnarayan Pandey, elected Kapilvastu Constituency No. 1 (a), resigned after UML Parliamentary Party leader Pokharel was re-appointed as Chief Minister.
Similarly, Dharma Bahadur Lal Shrivastav elected from Kapilvastu Constituency No. 2 (b) and Ajay Shahi of Nawalparasi West have stated that they will not support Pokharel.
