9,305 Covid-19 cases recorded as second wave infections hits Nepal hard; active cases cross 100,000-mark

Kathmandu: The country has recorded an additional 9,305 new Covid-19 cases, taking the caseload to a total of 422,416. According to the Ministry of Health and Population, samples of 20,362 people were tested through the PCR method while 424 samples were tested adopting the antigen method.

A total of 168 people died from the virus in the past 24 hours. So far, the death toll from the infection has hit 4,252, according to the Ministry.

Nepal is struggling with a second wave of the pandemic with record-high new coronavirus cases being reported in the past few days. Hospitals are reeling under a shortage of medical oxygen and running out of beds. Major hospitals are refusing to admit new patients citing a lack of oxygen.

Major parts of the country including the federal capital Kathmandu are under prohibitory order to curb the spread of the virus. However, cases have continued to surge. In the past 24 hours, Kathmandu Valley recorded 3,924 fresh cases— Kathmandu district saw 3,250 cases, Lalitpur 448, and Bhaktapur 226.

Meanwhile, 4,444 recovered in the past 24 hours and the country has 101,634 active cases.
