Kathmandu: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a show-cause notice on a writ filed demanding to halt Kaligandaki-Tinau Diversion Multipurpose Project.

During a preliminary hearing on the case on Wednesday, a single bench of Justice Tej Bahadur KC ordered the defendants to furnish a written clarification.

Advocates Tulasiram Pokharel, Ram Bahadur Shahi, and Santosh Bhandari had moved the apex court with the writ demanding to halt the project. They have argued that the project will affect millions of locals in Gandaki Province and the river basin. The writ also claims that the diversion project is against the essence of federalism.

The project has been highlighted after Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel inaugurated the office of the project in Butwal.

The project aims to irrigate 107,000 hectares of land in Lumbini and generate 125 MW of electricity by diverting 80 percent of the water of Kaligandaki River to Tinau River.
