Kathmandu: A new development in the political equation in Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSPN) that is on the verge of a split has been witnessed after the appointment of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba as Prime Minister.

Top leaders—Mahanta Thakur and Rajendra Mahato and Upendra Yadav and Baburam Bhattarai— are leading two factions of the party. The authenticity row is under consideration in the Election Commission after both factions claimed them to be legitimate.

In the meantime, lawmakers of the Thakur faction have started switching to the Yadav camp. The lawmakers participated in an informal meeting of the Parliamentary Party of the Yadav faction on Saturday.

Lawmakers Pramod Sah, Ruhi Naaz, Amrita Agrahari, Rani Mandal, and Naramaya Dhakal attended the meeting, said leader Mohammad Estiyak Rai of the Yadav faction, adding that more lawmakers will be joining the camp soon.

The Upendra faction commands a majority in the JSPN’s Central Executive Committee and is preparing to extend its majority to the parliamentary party before the Election Commission resolves the authenticity dispute.
