Kathmandu: Former Judges Forum, Nepal has demanded to impeach Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana. Forum Chairperson Top Bahadur Singh issued a statement on Monday demanding the impeachment of Chief Justice Rana ‘to protect the judiciary.’

The statement mentioned that there is sufficient basis to file an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice alleging him of being involved in ‘seeking a share in Cabinet’ and violating the code of conduct.

The Forum commented that CJ Rana’s call to the Nepal Bar Association for dialogues was an ill attempt to hide deviation from justice and corruption.

Stating that Chief Justice Rana has lost the trust of the Bar, an integral part of the judiciary, the forum said that Rana’s immediate departure will benefit the judiciary.

In the first formal remarks on a protest being staged demanding his resignation, the Chief Justice on Monday called on legal practitioners for dialogues.

Issuing a statement, the Chief Justice said that unity of all was needed to end the obstruction at the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice in the statement urged the people to unite against any attempt to derail the judiciary and called on legal practitioners for dialogues.

The Nepal Bar Association, the umbrella organization of legal practitioners in Nepal, has been protesting against the Chief Justice for the past two weeks demanding his resignation.

The Chief Justice is under immense pressure to resign after allegations that he sought a share in the expansion of the Council of Ministers, which raised a question on the dignity of the judiciary.
