Kathmandu: The government tabled six ordinances in the House of Representatives on Tuesday amid obstruction from the main opposition party CPN-UML.

At the beginning of the first meeting of the Parliament’s winter session, UML lawmakers stood from their seats and picketed the rostrum. Amid sloganeering from UML lawmakers, Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Dilendra Prasad Badu tabled six ordinances.

Minister Badu presented Nepal Police and Province Police (Operations, Supervision and Coordination First Amendment, 2021, Acid and Infectious Chemical Materials Regulation Ordinance, 2021 and Social Security (First Amendment) Ordinance, 2021, an ordinance to amend some laws against sexual violence, 2021 and an ordinance to amend some Acts on criminal offense and criminal work procedure, 2021. Likewise, he also presented Railway Ordinance.

The next meeting has been called for December 21.

The main opposition party, UML, had obstructed the earlier House session as well demanding that 14 lawmakers it took action should be dismissed. The session of the Parliament had failed to deliberate on crucial bills, even discuss the vital public concerns due to the continuous obstruction of the House proceedings. The government had recalled the bill following continuous obstruction from UML.

The current session of the Parliament will be keenly watched as the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact signed between the government of Nepal and the MCC in May 2017 is still waiting for parliamentary ratification.

During a recent Nepal visit, US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu had urged political leaders to get the Compat endorsed through the Parliament at the soonest.
