Kathmandu: Nepal has reported 24 new cases of omicron variant of coronavirus.
Issuing a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Health and Population said that the variant was confirmed through gene sequencing of samples collected throughout the country.
The ministry said that S-gene screening was performed on 1,146 random samples collected in the Nepali month of Poush (December-January). A total of 250 samples came out S-gene negative and 24 samples were confirmed to be omicron variant when further gene sequencing was performed.
Keeping in view of a possible increase in hospitalization, the Ministry has instructed all hospitals to maintain a high alert, manage an adequate supply of oxygen and other essential items and health workers have been instructed to be on a high alert.

Earlier, Nepal had reported three cases of the variant (B.1.1.529) announced by the World Health Organization as the ‘universal variant of concern’.
