Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ discussed local polls on Monday.

The leaders discussed the upcoming local polls and National Assembly election slated for January 26. They also agreed to summon a meeting of High-Level Political Mechanism for 9 am on Tuesday.

“The Election Commission has recommended date for local elections. The government has to make a decision soon,” said a leader close to Deuba.

The government is preparing to decide on local polls after discussing with the coalition partners.

The Election Commission has stated that local-level elections should be declared within the third week of January.

Speaking at a recent all-party discussion organized by the Election Commission, Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya had said that the election date should be declared soon so that the commission gets enough time for preparation.

The Election Commission has proposed to the government to hold local elections on April 27. If polls can’t be held in a single phase, the commission has suggested holding polls on April 27 and May 5.
