Kathmandu: The ruling alliance has agreed to hold the local level elections in Baisakh (April/May).

At a time when there are differences in the ruling coalition whether to hold local level elections in April or not, leaders have agreed to conduct polls as proposed by the Election Commission.

Leaders of the ruling alliance have agreed to hold the upcoming local elections in April during a meeting organized in the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, confirmed Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki.

The term of locally-elected representatives is ending on May 20.

Earlier, the Election Commission had proposed elections be held on April 27 if held in a single phase, and on April 27 and May 5 if held in two phases.

The ruling alliance is even discussing holding three-tier elections–local, provincial, and federal–together. However, the main opposition, CPN-UML, has been saying the government must hold local elections in April.
