Kathmandu: The ruling alliance has agreed to hold local polls within mid-June.

The agreement was reached at a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Saturday, said Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki.

“The High-level Political Mechanism has suggested to the government through the prime minister. It has suggested amending laws, if necessary. Now the government will announce polls in consultation with the Election Commission,” said Minister Karki while emerging from the meeting.

The term of the locally-elected representatives is expiring on May 20 this year. The Election Commission has proposed local elections for April 27 in case of single-phase and on April 27 and May 5 in case of two phases. The commission needs 120 days from the date of the announcement for election-related management and preparation.
