Dassanayake: “Cricketers are on the right track, my focus is getting the best out of what we have”

As Nepal prepares for T20 World Cup Qualifiers, Head Coach Pubudu Dassanayake hopes to secure a World Cup berth.

Kathmandu: Nepal Men’s National Cricket Team Head Coach Pubudu Dassanayake has remarked that he expects Nepal to come up with good results in the T20 World Cup Qualifiers.

Speaking at a virtual discussion organized by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), Dassanayake said, “At present, getting into the world cup is important for us. Looking at the preparation we have made, I have full confidence that we will come up with a good result.”

Currently, the national team is preparing for the global qualifiers taking place in Oman in February.  

Dassanayake who was appointed in December is confident that he will again lift the level of Nepali cricket. Dassanayake had previously worked as the coach of the Nepali national team from 2011-15. He is considered as one of the successful coaches of the national team. Nepal had played T20 World Cup in Bangladesh under his leadership.

“I have the confidence to do it again. I will do my best to put Nepal on a higher level,” he said during the virtual discussion. “The cricketers are on the right track. My core focus is getting the best out of what we have.”

Currently, the national team is preparing for the global qualifiers taking place in Oman in February.  

Bibek Yadav and Lokesh Bam will be debuting for the national team during the qualifiers. 

The national cricket team will be playing for the first time under Sandeep Lamichhane’s captaincy. He believes the qualifiers are personally a big opportunity for him and also for the entire team. 

“The involvement of senior and experienced players like Gyanendra Malla, Sharad Veswakar, and Karan KC will be beneficial for the team,” said Lamichhane. “As a captain, I will respect everyone’s opinions regarding the matches.” 

“We have a very strong team, and as a captain, I am so lucky to have a side like this,” Lamichhane added.
