Kathmandu: The Nepal Vegetable Ghee and Oil Manufacturers’ Association has requested the government to reconsider customs duties to provide relief to the consumers in the price of edible oil.

Stating that 22 refined edible oil-producing industries affiliated to the association are supplying soybean oil and sunflower oil among others, the association said that raw materials required for the industry–crude soybean oil, crude sunflower oil, crude palm oil and mustard seeds– are imported from abroad.

The association claimed that the increase in the price of edible oil is not unusual as the price of raw materials has doubled. The association has stressed that Nepal, like Sri Lanka and India, should reduce customs duties to provide relief to consumers in the local market.
