Govt slashes fuel prices following widespread criticism

The government decided to reduce petrol price by Rs 20 per liter and diesel price by Rs 28 per liter.

Kathmandu: The government has reduced the prices of petroleum products by curtailing taxes. Holding a press conference on Saturday, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Dilendra Prasad Badu said the government decided to cut Rs 20 tax on petrol and Rs 28 tax on diesel to control the rising inflation.

With the price cut, a liter of petrol will cost Rs 179 and diesel Rs 164 per liter. The new prices will come into effect from Saturday midnight.

Earlier today, the ruling coalition had directed the government to lower taxes imposed on petroleum products.

A meeting of the top leaders of the ruling alliance held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar decided to direct the government to tame the inflation and to provide relief to the people struggling with rising prices, said Ramesh Malla, Personal Secretary to CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda.
