Kathmandu: Kathmandu Valley houses squatter settlements along the banks of the Bagmati, Bishnumati, Manohara, Dhobikhola, and Godavari rivers.

The monsoon’s drenched splendour has its own appeal, but not to squatters. For them, every monsoon is a nightmare. Squatter communities along riverbanks get inundated every monsoon. Throughout the monsoon, thousands of squatter homes along the banks of the rivers experience restless nights.

According to the Society for the Preservation of Shelters and Habitation in Nepal, there are around four million squatters residing in Nepal’s cities and towns, including 50,000 in Kathmandu.
