Nepali American Sarahana Shrestha wins US state election

Shrestha, who ran on behalf of the Democratic Party, defeated real estate tycoon Patrick Sheehan by a vote of 35,493 to 23,104 to win the 103rd New York State District Assembly seat.

Kathmandu: Sarahana Shrestha, a Nepali American, has been elected to the New York State Assembly.

In the recently concluded Mid-term elections, Shrestha, who ran on behalf of the Democratic Party, defeated real estate tycoon Patrick Sheehan by a vote of 35,493 to 23,104 to win the 103rd New York State District Assembly seat on Tuesday.

Shrestha is the Ulster County co-chair for the Mid-Hudson Valley chapter of Democratic Socialists of America and a leader in Public Power NY, a coalition of organizations focused on promoting a clean, renewable, affordable and accessible power supply. 

A native of Nepal, Shrestha became a US citizen in 2019.

Shrestha is the oldest child of Gyanendra Das and Seema Shrestha’s three children and grew up in a family of photographers.

“So many people do not have a voice in what happens to the world, who is affected by war and ecological disaster,” said Shrestha, adding that as an American citizen, we can do a lot.

Before moving to the United States, Shrestha published and edited the youth magazine ZING! in 1997, during her SLC break. Then she worked as a radio show host and producer with IMAGE FM 97.9 from 1999 to 2001.

Shrestha is a self-taught graphics designer and website developer, before pursuing it in a college in New York in 2001.
