Kathmandu: Moments after he was appointed Prime Minister, China and India expressed congratulations to Pushpa Kamal Dahal, ‘Prachanda’ on Sunday. Dahal is set to take oath of office and secrecy today afternoon.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent him the “warmest congratulations” on being elected as the Prime Minister of Nepal. “The unique relationship between India & Nepal is based on deep cultural connect & warm people-to-people ties. I look forward to working together with you to further strengthen this friendship,” Modi wrote on Twitter Sunday evening.
Before Modi posted the message on Twitter, China had already congratulated Prachanda.
“Warmly congratulate Chairman Prachanda on being appointed as 44th Prime Minister of Nepal,” wrote Spokesperson of Chinese embassy in Kathmandu on Twitter.
After a dramatic and unexpected turn of political events on Sunday, the five-party democrat-communist coalition broke away, paving the way for Prachanda to become the Prime Minister with the support of seven parties.
Prachanda and CPN-UML chair KP Oli, fiercest critics of each other until Saturday, came to join hands for power sharing deal. Prachanda had vowed to stay within the Congress-led alliance and Deuba, it was widely thought, would be continued as the PM in the new government.
In Kathmandu, sudden shift of camp by Prachanda to UML and the consensus he was able to secure so quickly has taken everyone by surprise.
