Kathmandu: An ardent opponent of the much debated US-funded Millennium Challenge Corporation Nepal Compact at one time, Narayan Kaji Shrestha has been appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister in the Prachanda-led cabinet.

CPN (Maoist Center) leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha, who is also a member of the National Assembly, the upper house of the Federal Parliament,  has been picked by Prachanda as his one of the deputies.

Though Shrestha had never joined armed conflict, he has demonstrated fluctuating character over the course of time. He was leader of Ekata Kendra Masal [Unity Center, Masal] until 2009.

Shrestha was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister in the Jhalanath Khanal led government in 2011. Later, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in the new Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) coalition government led by Dr Baburam Bhattarai.

He has also been entrusted with the role of Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport in the new government.
