Dev Raj Ghimire elected House Speaker

Ghimire of CPN-UML got 167 votes in the 275-member lower house

Kathmandu: Dev Raj Ghimire, CPN-UML standing committee member and party in-charge of Province 1, has been elected the House Speaker on Thursday. 

Pashupati Shumsher Rana, who was chairing today’s House session, announced the proposal to elect Ghimire as the Speaker has been endorsed by a majority.

Ghimire got 167 votes, while a total of 100 lawmakers voted against the proposal. Likewise, one lawmaker abstained. 

On Wednesday, Ghimire registered his candidacy for the post. Ghimire’s candidacy was proposed by CPN-UML lawmaker Subas Nembang and seconded by CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Hitraj Pandey, Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane and Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman Rajendra Lingden.

Ghimire was supported by lawmakers from CPN-UML, Maoist Center, Rastriya Swatanra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Janta Samajwadi Party, Janamat Party, Nagarik Unmukti Party. Likewise, three independent lawmakers Amresh Kumar Singh, Prabhu Shah and Yogesh Mandal also voted for Ghimire.

In the November elections, Ghimire won from Jhapa-2.
