Lower House to elect Deputy Speaker today

Nepal’s constitution requires that there is one woman out of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, and they should be representatives from different parties.

Kathmandu:The House of Representatives of Federal parliament in Nepal is electing Deputy Speaker in the afternoon today.

According to the constitution, the House should elect Speaker and Deputy Speaker within fifteen days of the date of holding of the first meeting of the House of Representatives. The constitution also requires that there is one woman out of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, and the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives should be representatives from different parties.

As such two female candidates from two different parties are vying for the post.

Indira Rana, from Rastriya Swatantra Party, and Mukta Kumari Yadav from Nepali Congress are vying for the post. The House on Thursday elected Devraj Ghimire, who was the MP from CPN-UML, as the Speaker.
