Kathmandu: A Canadian national named Mohammad Kamal Mohgob, of UAE origin, was arrested at Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal for possessing 9.135 kg of illegal gold.

According to the airport’s Customs Office, Mohgob arrived from Dubai and was found to have hidden the gold in false buttons on his waist. A blue-colored metal was also seized and tested positive for gold.

The incident is being investigated further and may be connected to a recent gold smuggling operation involving two Sudanese nationals, said police.

Nepal has been used as a transit point for smuggling gold into India.

Mohgob arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport on a Fly Dubai aircraft at 11:45 PM on Wednesday. He was apprehended by the police at 12:10 AM.
