Kathmandu: The government has decided to declare Padam Bahadur Limbu, who lost his life during a protest demanding the renaming of Koshi province based on identity, as a martyr.

The cabinet meeting, which was held on Friday, made the decision to declare him a martyr and provide reparations to his family. Limbu, a 42-year-old resident of Dharan sub-metropolitan city-15 in Sunsari district, sustained injuries during a clash with the police in Biratnagar on March 19.

Limbu passed away while undergoing treatment. The ongoing protests across the province were sparked by the decision to name the province Koshi, and pro-identity groups have been organizing various demonstrations in response. Following Limbu’s tragic death, the intensity of the protests has only increased.
