Kathmandu: Following the arrest of high-level political leaders in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, there is an apparent debate in Nepal’s political sphere-whether there is concern from the United States to take action against people involved in converting Nepali nationals into Bhutanese refugees.

Member of Parliament (MP) from Nepal’s ruling CPN (Maoist-Center) Madhav Sapkota claimed that US agency Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) too is investigating the issue during the parliament session on Wednesday.

“Fake Bhutanese refugee issues have created a heated debate in the country.

Similarly, it has been an issue of international attention. To the best of my knowledge, the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) has also taken this issue seriously and has been carrying out an investigation into the issue,” he said. “That’s why, I request all, let us not link this issue to our petty interest and let us not politicize this issue. I draw the attention of all. Let’s take this issue seriously.”

Earlier, Nepali Congress leader and MP Dr Arzu Deuba Rana had also given a similar statement. US agency Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is also investigating the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, Republica online had quoted her as saying.

Back in the country, many independent people believe that the investigation and subsequent arrest of powerful politicians could not have been possible without international pressure given the over-politicization of Nepal’s police mechanism and anti-graft bodies.
