Nepal takes on Zimbabwe in ICC World Cup Qualifiers opener

Kathmandu: Nepal is playing against Zimbabwe in the opening game of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2023 at Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe.

This is the second encounter between the two sides. During their first encounter in the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers, Zimbabwe emerged victorious with a 116-run win. However, Nepal’s team, led by Rohit Paudel, is entering the tournament with high spirits. They achieved remarkable victories in the ICC World Cup League 2, securing a direct entry into the Qualifiers. Nepal has won 13 out of their 14 ODIs played this year.

Both teams are aiming to secure spots in the ICC World Cup, scheduled to take place in India from October 5 to November 19. Only the top two teams from the 10-team tournament will qualify for the World Cup.

Both captains expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming tournament. Nepal’s Paudel mentioned their hard work and excitement to play against strong cricketing nations, while Zimbabwe’s Ervine praised the team’s preparations and highlighted the presence of talented players.

In Group ‘A’, Nepal will face USA on June 20, followed by matches against West Indies and the Netherlands. Group ‘B’ consists of Ireland, Oman, Scotland, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage, where they will play against teams from the other group. The finalists of the Super Six stage will secure their spots in the World Cup.
