Kathmandu: The US Embassy in Kathmandu has congratulated Nepal on the Supreme Court’s interim order allowing for the marriage registration of LGBTQIA+ couples. “This decision is a significant step toward marriage equality and recognition in Nepal that marriage is a fundamental right. With the realization of full marriage equality, Nepal will continue to be a leader in protecting all citizens against discrimination,” US ambassador to Nepal Dean R Thompson, wrote on Twitter. “As we conclude Pride month, we are reminded that the freedom to marry means very little without the freedom to marry the person you love,” the US envoy mentioned. “We look forward to the day when all LGBTQIA+ Nepalis and Americans enjoy full fundamental rights and can resoundingly say “love wins.””
In a historic ruling, the Supreme Court of Nepal on Tuesday ordered the government to register marriage of same-sex couples and traditional non-heterosexual couples.
Nepal is the first South Asian country to recognize the rights of sexual minorities.
The single bench of Judge Til Prasad Shrestha issued an interim order, instructing the authorities to make necessary arrangements for registering marriages of same-sex couples.
