Kathmandu: Police on Sunday arrested Dawa Chhiring, a Chinese national who was also found to have Nepali passport, in connection with 100 kg gold smuggling case. On July 19, the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) had seized around 100 kgs of gold from Tribhuvan International Airport premises.

The arrest of Chinese national, at a time when involvement of nexus of high-level political actors, business leaders and bureaucrats is suspected, has pointed out possibility of Maoist connection in this matter.

Photos and video making rounds on social media indicate Dawa Chhiring possibly had close connections with Maoist leaders (or their secretaries) including the former Vice President Nanda Kishor Pun and his son, former Maoist minister Barsha Man Pun and others. Dawa Chhiring is seen in photos with Nanda Kishor Pun and his son. He is also seen dining with Barsha Man Pun.

Meanwhile,  Barsha Man Pun has denied that he had any connection with Dawa Chhiring. He also demanded the fair probe into the case.
