Kathmandu: In what appears like a bizarre incident, employees at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Customs Office have started a protest against what they term as unnecessary troubles caused to their colleagues in the name of the investigation on gold smuggling scam.

The protest follows the move by the police authority to arrest officials in connection with their alleged involvement in gold smuggling scam. On Sunday, the customs staffs halted the cargo inspection work at TIA. Police on Friday had arrested three TIA customs office staff in connection with the gold smuggling case.

Nepal Police has been probing the potential involvement of the TIA customs staffs in 60 kg gold smuggling scam.

Protesting staff have accused the law enforcement agency of treating them like criminals even as they were performing their duties.  They have also accused the police and other authorities of unnecessary intervention and harassment to the customs office. They have called for the release of the customs staffs arrested on charge of their alleged involvement in gold smuggling scam.

A number of individuals, including the sons of high-profile political leaders and TIA customs office staff, have been arrested over the gold smuggling scam.
