Swarnim Wagle discusses economy, Nepal-Sri Lanka ties with Sri Lankan President

Kathmandu: Dr Swarnim Wagle, Nepali economist and a lawmaker from Rastriya Swatantra Party, met with President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe during his visit to the island nation.  He discussed the economy of Sri Lanka, Lumbini as a bond in Nepal-Sri Lanka relations, future of SAARC and new prospects of information and technology, according to the statement by RSP. Dr Wagle also appealed to Sri Lanka to cast vote in favor of Dr Shambhu Acharya, who in Nepal’s candidate for the post of WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Region Office (WHO SEARO).

The government of Nepal in August proposed Dr Acharya for the post of WHO SEARO but it is facing allegations that it is not doing enough to garner support for Dr Acharya.

During the meeting he also handed a copy of his research paper, coauthored with Dr Prema-chandra Athukorala, to the Sri Lankan President. Swarnim Wagle, former Vice-Chair of Nepal’s National Planning Commission and Chief Economic Advisor at UNDP Asia-Pacific, had addressed Sri Lankan members of parliament at the special invitation of the Chair of the committee on public finance, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, in April, 2022. Sri Lanka at the time was facing the worst economic crisis.
