Court hands down life sentences to 23 individuals for brutal murder of Dalit youths in Rukum West

Kathmandu: The Rukum West District Court has sentenced 23 individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in the brutal killing of six Dalit youths in Soti of Rukum West district three and a half years ago.

A single bench of Judge Khadga Bhadur KC on Tuesday handed down the life imprisonment sentences, convicting them of the murder of Nabaraj BK and five of his friends from the neighboring district of Jajarkot. The victims were targeted after the group arrived to assist Nabaraj in eloping with his 17-year-old girlfriend.

The bodies of the victims, including that of Nabaraj BK, were discovered in the Bheri River and its vicinity.

In addition to the life sentences, the court on Tuesday sentenced BK’s girlfriend, along with her father and mother, to two years in jail on charges of untouchability. They have also been fined Rs 50,000.

Three different cases were filed against 34 people for their involvement in the killings of Dalit youths in Soti, Rukum (West).
