Narayan Dahal elected National Assembly Chair

In the voting that took place on Tuesday, 39 votes were cast in favor of his candidacy, while 17 votes were against the proposal to elect him.

Kathmandu: Narayan Dahal of CPN (Maoist Center) has been elected as the chair of the National Assembly, the upper house of parliament. 

Dahal defeated Nepali Congress candidate Yuvaraj Sharma in the election for National Assembly chair held at the Federal Parliament building in New Baneshwar, Kathmandu. 

In the voting that took place on Tuesday, 39 votes were cast in favor of his candidacy, while 17 votes were against the proposal to elect the common candidate of the ruling alliance to the post. Dahal’s candidacy was supported by CPN (UML) and CPN (Unified Socialist) and the Janata Samajwadi Party. 

A total of 56 lawmakers participated in the voting, of which two lawmakers abstained. Likewise, Urmila Aryal, who chaired the meeting, did not participate in the voting. 

An earlier proposal to elect Yuvraj Sharma of Nepali Congress was rejected by the meeting as 17 votes were cast in favor of his candidacy, while 39 were against it. Sharma was supported by Nepali Congress and the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party. 

The position of National Assembly chair became vacant following the completion of Ganesh Prasad Timilsina’s term on March 3.
