KATHMANDU: The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) plans to construct a modern and well-equipped terminal building at Biratnagar Airport at a cost of Rs 3 billion.

CAAN claims that the terminal building will be the largest terminal buildings among airports that are currently operational.

The national aviation governing body has already prepared a master plan for the expansion of the major airport of eastern Nepal.

As per the master plan, CAAN is going to acquire land for the development and upgrading of the airport along with the construction of a new terminal building at the airport.

CAAN Executive Director Rajan Pokharel stated that the terminal building is being constructed taking the increase in the number of passengers and a regional international airport into consideration.

“The new terminal building is being constructed in Biratnagar as per a plan to construct modern and well-equipped terminal buildings in Terai,” said Pokharel, “The procurement process has been taken forward after design finalized.”

Along with the new terminal building, the existing runway will be extended to 2,500-3,000 meters from the existing 1,500 meters.
