Kathmandu: President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Sunday summoned a session of the Parliament for May 10 on the recommendation of the government for Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli to take a vote of confidence.
The meeting has been summoned for 1 pm on May 10.
Earlier, a meeting of Council of Ministers held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar had decided to recommend before President Bhandari to summon the House.
As per the Constitutional provision, President summons and prorogues Parliament session on recommendation of Cabinet.
During the Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister told Cabinet ministers that he will be facing the Parliament for a vote of confidence.
A statement from the President’s Office stated that the session was convened as Prime Minister Oli decided to take a vote of confidence.
The Prime Minister opted to take a vote of confidence although the CPN (Maoist Center) has not withdrawn support to the incumbent government.
In the 271-member House of Representatives, UML has 121 seats, Nepali Congress 63, Maoist Center of Pushpa Kamal Dahal 49, Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) 34, and smaller parties four seats.
To remain in office, the prime minister must have the support of 136 lawmakers.
It should be noted that the UML faction led by Oli commands around 86 seats while UML led by Madhav Nepal has 35 lawmakers.
