Nepal records highest daily surge of 9,070 new Covid-19 cases; hotspot Valley sees 18,951 cases in last five days

Kathmandu: Nepal on Thursday recorded 9,070 fresh coronavirus cases in yet another highest single-day spike.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, 8,970 were diagnosed with the virus in PCR tests while 100 were confirmed positive in the test undertaken through the antigen method.

Samples of 20,367 people were tested through the PCR method while 775 were tested adopting the antigen method.

With this, the number of active cases of coronavirus across the country has reached 72,561.

Likewise, the Kathmandu Valley has recorded 3,972 coronavirus infection-related cases.

The country has so far recorded a total number of 368,580 coronavirus cases.

According to the ministry, 54 people had lost their lives to coronavirus infection in the past 24 hours. As of today, the coronavirus-related death has reached 3,529.

With this, the number of active cases of coronavirus across the country has reached 72,561.


A total of 2,707 have recovered from the virus during the period. So far 292,490 infected have recovered from coronavirus, the ministry shared.

Surging cases in Valley

Kathmandu Valley recorded 18,951 coronavirus cases in the last five days.

May 2

On May 2, health authorities in Nepal recorded 7,211 new coronavirus cases in the highest single-day spike and 27 fatalities. Covid-19 hotspot Kathmandu Valley recorded 3,595 cases—Bhaktapur registered 301 cases, Lalitpur 550, and Kathmandu 2,744 cases.

May 3

Health authorities in Nepal recorded 7,448 new coronavirus cases in the highest single-day spike and 37 fatalities. Covid-19 hotspot Kathmandu Valley recorded 3,666 cases—Bhaktapur registered 222 cases, Lalitpur 522, and Kathmandu 2,922 cases.

The country recorded 7,660 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours in the highest single-day spike. Out of new cases, a total of 3,893 were from the Kathmandu Valley alone. Of them, altogether 2,779 were in Kathmandu district, 513 in Bhaktapur, and 601 in Lalitpur.

May 5

Nepal registered 8,659 cases of Covid-19 in yet another highest single-day spike as second wave infections rage across the country. Out of new cases, a total of 3,825 were from the Kathmandu Valley alone. Of them, altogether 2,849 were in Kathmandu district, 458 in Bhaktapur, and 518 in Lalitpur.

Procurement of medical supplies

The government has that it was effortful to procure more medical supplies from abroad to control Covid-19.

In a statement issued by Spokesperson at the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers Kiranraj Acharya here today, it was shared that the consistent efforts were being made by the government to bring in necessary medicines, safety gears, and medical appliances through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the statement, a total of 5,000 doses of Remdesivir vaccines from Bangladesh. The government is procuring the vaccines from Beximco Pharma in Bangladesh through IFC and Nepal Bangladesh Bank.

3,000 vials of Remdesivir brought

Earlier on Tuesday, 3,000 vials of Remdesivir were brought. The medical supplies worth five million Yuan to be provided by the government of China to Nepal were on the way. The medical goods have arrived in Lhasa.

As the second wave of Covid-19 has broken out in the country, over 7,000 cases were being reported on a daily basis in Nepal.

6,288 oxygen cylinders in use

Over 6,288 oxygen cylinders and 1,411.5 liters of liquid oxygen were being used to treat the Covid-19 patients. Currently, 31 hospitals had their own oxygen plant, reads the statement, adding that those plants could refill 2,549 oxygen cylinders on a daily basis. Likewise, three hospitals have oxygen tanks.

There are 472 hospitals, 19,882 beds and 1,714 ICU facilities, and 692 ventilator facilities in the country where Covid-19 patients were being treated.
