Kathmandu: The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday ordered to release former Chief Commissioner of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Deep Basnyat currently in judicial custody.

A joint bench of Justices Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Ishwor Prasad Khatiwada sought a bail bond of Rs 500,000 while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed demanding his release.

Basnyat’s son-in-law Prajwal Adhikari had filed a petition at the apex court last Friday allowing him to fight his case while on bail by demanding Basnyat’s release on the ground of his ailing health.

Basnyat has been remanded in custody since December 2020.

Basnyat has been infected with Covid-19 and is being treated at Om Hospital in Chabahil, Kathmandu. The writ petition stated that 69-year-old Basnyat has been suffering from health complications.

The CIAA had filed a case against 110 individuals including Basnyat on February 5, 2020, alleging them of playing role in transferring public land (Lalita Niwas) at Baluwatar, Kathmandu in individual’s ownership.

Basnyat has been remanded in custody since December 2020 after the order of the Special Court on the charge of his involvement in Lalita Niwas land scam.
