Kathmandu: Voting is underway to elect a vacant National Assembly (NA) member in Bagmati Province in the by-elections on Thursday.
The voting began at 9 am and will end at 3 pm, according to Election Commission.
A total of 348 voters including 110 province assembly members of Bagmati and 2,388 chairs and vice-chairs of rural municipalities and mayors and deputy mayors of municipalities under the Bagmati province are eligible to cast their votes in today’s by-elections.
The weightage of a vote of province assembly member is 48 while it is 18 in the case of the chairs/mayors and vice-chairs/deputy mayors in the by-election.
The EC has urged all the voters to participate in the election to pick a NA member. Voting will take place at the polling center kept in Bhutandevi higher secondary school in Hetauda sub-metropolis-4.
The arrangement has been made for separate voting for province assembly members, people’s representatives of the local level, and coronavirus-infected voters. One can cast their vote by showing the voter ID card issued earlier in different elections, citizenship certificate, or national ID card.
In the election, CPN-UML has fielded Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa while other major political parties and the Madhav Nepal faction of UML have jointly supported the candidacy of Dr Khimlal Devkota. Likewise, Krishna Bahadur Tamang has filed his candidature on behalf of the Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party.
According to the EC, the vote count result will also come today. The arrangement has been placed in a way to announce the by-election result through virtual mode, said Chief Election Officer Justice Dilliratna Shrestha.
The vote count will begin at 5: 00 pm this evening. All health safety protocols will be strictly followed during voting, EC said.
