Kathmandu: Parties in the opposition alliance have decided to jointly protest against the dissolution of the House of Representatives by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari on the recommendation by Prime Minister K P Oli, both politically and legally.
A meeting of top-notch leaders including Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, CPN-UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, Janata Samajbadi Party Federal Council Chairman Baburam Bhattarai and Chairman Upendra Yadav and Rastriya Janamorcha Vice-Chairman Durga Poudel held on Saturday decided to that end.
The meeting also decided to move the Supreme Court against the dissolution. The leaders also called on other political parties and the people to strongly protest the dissolution.
The meeting concluded that Prime Minister Oli announced mid-term polls with a ploy to extend his ‘autocratic rule’ and President Bhandari, in collusion with Oli, dissolved the House maliciously and attacked Nepal’s constitution and democracy.
“This reactionary move has pushed the country towards new political polarization and complexity,” reads the statement issued after the meeting.
President Bhandari in the wee hours of Saturday dissolved the House of Representatives and announced mid-term elections to be held in two phases. Earlier, President Bhandari had concluded that the claims made by Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chair Oli and Nepali Congress President Deuba to form the next government were not sufficient.
