Kathmandu: Opposition alliance has moved the Supreme Court (SC) seeking a mandamus order to reinstate the House of Representatives and appoint Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba as Prime Minister.
In the writ presented before the apex court on Monday afternoon, the leaders of the alliance have demanded order in the name of the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas, to appoint Deuba as the Prime Minister as per Article 76 (5) of the Constitution.
Leaders of Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN-UML (Madhav Nepal faction), Janata Samajbadi Party (Upendra Yadav faction), and Rastriya Janamorcha reached the court. Signatures of 146 lawmakers have been submitted with the writ. The meeting of the alliance held on Saturday had decided to seek a legal remedy against House dissolution.
President Bidhya Devi Bhandari in the wee hours of Saturday had dissolved the House of Representatives and announced mid-term elections to be held in two phases. Earlier, President Bhandari had concluded that the claims made by Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chair K P Sharma Oli and NC President Deuba to form the next government were not sufficient.
