Kathmandu: The government will be unveiling Rs 1.6 trillion budget for the fiscal year 2021-22.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Saturday forwarded the budget to President Bidya Devi Bhandari for enactment as an ordinance, said Minister for Forest and Environment Prem Ale.

Minister for Finance Bishnu Poudel will make public the budget for the coming fiscal year from the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar at 4 pm today.

As per the constitutional provision, the government needs to table the budget before the Parliament on May 29. The new budget is being brought through an ordinance following the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

There are clear indications that the government will be unveiling ‘a populist budget’ focusing on the midterm elections after the Parliament was dissolved. It should be noted that former Finance Ministers and Vice-Chairpersons of the National Planning Commission (NPC) had urged the government not to bring the entire budget for the next fiscal year. However, the government ignored the request.
