Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) Parliamentary Party Leader Krishna Chandra Nepali Pokharel has been appointed Gandaki Province Chief Minister on Saturday.

Province Chief Sita Kumari Poudel appointed Pokharel to lead a new government pursuant to Article 168(5) of the Constitution. Now, Pokharel needs to get confidence of the Province Assembly within 30 days.

Pokharel had staked a claim for the Chief Minister’s post before the Province Chief on Friday. He had presented signatures of 31 lawmakers including 15 from NC, 11 from CPN (Maoist Center), two each from Rastriya Janamorcha and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, and one independent lawmaker Deepak Manange.

Earlier today, following in Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s footsteps, Gandaki Province Chief Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung had also staked a claim to lead a new government. He had submitted signatures of party committees of Rastriya Janamorcha and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal. But, province Chief Poudel dismissed the claim.

Province Chief Poudel had made the call for the new government yesterday as per Article 168(5) of the Constitution after Chief Minister Gurung had lost a vote of confidence on Thursday.

As per the article, if any member presents a ground on which he or she can obtain a vote of confidence, the Province Chief shall appoint such member as the Chief Minister.

CM Gurung had faced the Province Assembly as he was appointed the Chief Minister according to Article 168 (3) of the Constitution as Parliamentary Party leader of the largest political party in Gandaki Province Assembly.
