Kathmandu: The Nepal Telecom Authority (NTA) clarified that International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) should not be registered for mobile phones purchased in Nepal.

Issuing a notice on Wednesday, the Authority shared that it was not necessary to re-register the IMEI number of the mobile set imported and purchased in Nepal as per the rules in terms of business.

NTA is implementing a mobile device management system (MDMS) from July 16 in order to make it systematic by discouraging illegal import, sale, distribution, and use of mobile sets.

“Many mobile users have been visiting the Authority due to confusion whether they have to register IMEI of their set they have been using. A technical problem has surfaced in the system due to excessive flow of people registering IMEI of their mobile sets in the website available in Authority’s website and it will take some time for resumption of the website” reads the notice.
