Kathmandu: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) hosted the Nepal NSOAP Orientation Webinar Series with the support of the Nick Simons Institute (NSI) on July 19-22.
The event consisted of a multi-disciplinary group meeting of more than 100 national and international stakeholders representing the federal and provincial level governments of Nepal, the World Health Organization, bilateral and multilateral development agencies.
Likewise, the event also saw the participation of philanthropic organizations, professional societies, non-governmental institutions, and academia and universities to discuss the collective effort for a National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan (NSOAP) in Nepal.
The main objective of the NSOAP Orientation Program Series was to start the conversation of the importance of surgical care and understand the process of developing an NSOAP in Nepal. Presentations were given by experts and specialists from Harvard Program in Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC), Interactive Research & Development (IRD) Global, and the Ministry of Health and Population of Nepal.
Esteemed international partners, UN Assistant Secretary-General, Nikhil Seth and UNITAR Director to the Division for People and Social Inclusion, Alex Mejia emphasized their commitment to providing continuous technical support with overall NSOAP development and implementation, capacity building of NSOAP team, partners, and ground-level actors, and financial support.
Addressing the event Dr. Roshan Pokharel, Chief Guest and Secretary of MoHP said, “The passion and enthusiasm from all who participated has ignited a call to action for the Ministry of Health and Population to define the concrete next steps for advancing surgical care in our country, in ways that meet the diverse and unique health needs of our people.”
