Kathmandu: An online petition has been filed to the British government and Parliament demanding equal pension to Gurkha veterans on par with their British counterparts.

The petition ‘We demand that the Gurkhas receive equal pensions’ registered by Roy Brinkley has so far received over 1,500 signatures.

“We are demanding that the government treats Gurkhas fairly and pays them the same pension as other British veterans of the same rank and service,” reads the petition. “…we are demanding all Gurkha veterans are paid an equal pension to other British veterans. That includes veterans from pre-1997.”

As per the rules, the petition will get a response from the British government once it gets 10,000 signatures and will be considered for a debate in Parliament after receiving 100,000 signatures.

Ex-Gurkhas have been staging a relay hunger strike in the United Kingdom to put pressure to address their demands. The British Gurkha Satyagraha United Struggle Committee started a relay hunger strike before the office of the British Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street from July 21.

Gurkha veterans have been protesting putting forth different demands including an equal pension on a par with their British counterparts.
