Kathmandu: Bagmati Province Chief Minister Astalaxmi Shakya resigned on Wednesday before voting on a confidence motion.

“I have paved the way for the formation of the new government as per Article 161 (1) of the Constitution,” said Shakya addressing a meeting of Bagmati Province Assembly.

Chief Minister Shakya said she had discussed it with the party Chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today itself and was advised to pave a way for further development if she was sure not to gain the vote of confidence. According to her, she would be paving a way for an alliance of five political parties to form a government.

CPN-UML leader Shakya had gone down in history as the first woman Chief Minister in the country after she was appointed to the post on August 18.

Earlier, Chief Minister Shakya had tabled a proposal to receive a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly as she had to gain the confidence of the provincial assembly following a split in the ruling party.

CPN (Unified Socialist) Parliamentary Party leader Rajendra Pandey is set to become the third Chief Minister of Bagmati Province. Opposition parties have already decided to forward Pandey’s name as the new Chief Minister.
