Kathmandu: Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines donated by the United States under the COVAX facility will be administered from Sunday to people with chronic illnesses aged over 12.
Chief of Child Health and Immunization Section of the Family Welfare Division Sagar Dahal said that the vaccination program will be conducted from 24 hospitals across the country that deliver specialist services. A total of eight hospitals in Kathmandu Valley and 16 outside the Valley have been designated for the vaccination campaign.
Dahal said that the chronically ill people above 18 years of age who missed the vaccination earlier will also be vaccinated. The vaccination drive will end on November 20.
“Most of the chronically ill people over the age of 18 have already been vaccinated,” he said. “It is estimated that vaccines will be enough for children aged 12-18.”
The government has approved the purchase of six million Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines. A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Monday had passed the proposal of the Ministry of Health and Population to procure the vaccines.
The government had initiated the procurement process for purchasing the vaccines for children aged up to 18 years.
Different studies have shown that Pfizer vaccines can also be administered to kids aged 5-11. Recent studies showed the vaccine to be 91 percent effective.
