Kathmandu: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli on Friday hinted that the main opposition party will not allow the House of Representatives to run its business.

Speaking to journalists after assuming his office as UML Chairman for the second time in a row, Oli expressed his dissatisfaction saying that lawmakers expelled by the party are still members of the Parliament.

“How can the Parliament run a business if people [CPN (Unified Socialist) lawmakers] expelled by us are present in the meeting? We won’t accept it,” said Oli.

The main opposition party, UML, had obstructed the earlier House session demanding that 14 lawmakers it took action should be dismissed. The session of the Parliament had failed to deliberate on crucial bills, even discuss the vital public concerns due to the continuous obstruction of the House proceedings.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has summoned the Federal Parliament session for December 14. Issuing a press statement, the Office of the President said that the Federal Parliament session was called on December 14 at the recommendation of the government as per Article 93 (1) of the Constitution of Nepal.

Spokesperson at the Office of the President, Sagar Acharya, stated that the session of both Houses has been called at 2 pm in the International Convention Centre, New Baneshwor.

The upcoming session of the Parliament will be keenly watched as the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact signed between the government of Nepal and the MCC in May 2017 is still waiting for parliamentary ratification. During a recent Nepal visit, US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu had urged political leaders to get the Compat endorsed through the Parliament at the soonest.
