Kathmandu: After gathering criticism for forcing vehicle owners for installing embossed number plates, the Department of Transportation (DoTM) has clarified that embossed number plates have not been made mandatory for all vehicles from July 17.

Issuing a statement on Tuesday, DOTM stated that embossed plates are being made mandatory only for the vehicles specified in a notice published in Nepal Gazette on November 8, 2021.

Earlier, the department had warned to take action if the embossed plates were not installed by mid-July. The move came under fire from several quarters.

In the Gazette published on November 8, 2021, it was mentioned that embossed number plates would be made compulsory for newly registered vehicles from November 17, for ownership transfer from February 13, and for renewing bill book from May 15, 2022.

The department has stated that the decision has been mandatory only for the vehicles specified in the notice published in Nepal Gazette and for other vehicles, the concerned vehicle offices will install embossed number plates after publishing the notice as per the lot number.
