Kathmandu: Protest has been staged in Kathmandu on Tuesday denouncing the execution of four democratic leaders and activists by the Myanmar Army.
Human rights activists demonstrated outside UN Nepal Office carrying different placards with messages: ‘We condemn the execution of democratic leaders’ and ‘End army rule in Myanmar’ among others.
Myanmar’s ruling military announced on Monday it had executed four democracy activists accused of aiding “terror acts”, sparking widespread condemnation of the country’s first executions in decades.
The men were found guilty of aiding a civilian resistance movement that has battled the military since last year’s coup and bloody crackdown on widespread protests and were given death sentences in covert trials in January and April.
Campaigner for democracy Kyaw Min Yu, also known as Jimmy, and former lawmaker and hip-hop artist Phyo Zeya Thaw, a supporter of deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi, were among those put to death. Hla Myo Aung and Aung Thura Zaw were the two other people put to death.
