Kathmandu: Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday said it is closely observing development in Taiwan following a visit by US Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Speaking at a regular press meet, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Sewa Lamsal said that Nepal always stands in favor of international peace, adding that Nepal has been always abiding by the ‘One-China policy.’

“Both the countries are in favor of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Nepal is always in favor of international peace,” she said.

She clarified that Nepal and China will not discuss the Taiwan issue during a three-day visit slated by Foreign Minister Narayan Khadka starting on Tuesday. The Foreign Affairs Minister is visiting China from August 9-11 at the invitation of State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Wang Yi.

China has denounced the US official’s visit as a violation of the one-China principle because it views Taiwan as a part of its territory. On Thursday, China continued to launch ballistic missiles into the waters near Taiwan even after Pelosi left Taipei.

Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand earlier on Friday assured Hou Yanqi, the Chinese ambassador to Nepal, of Nepal’s commitment to the one-China policy.
