Kathmandu: The Election Commission has directed Nepal Police to take action against Madhav Kumar Nepal, chair of CPN (Unified-Socialist), on the charge of breaching the election code of conduct.
In his election campaign in Rautahat-1 constituency, Nepal, also a former prime minister, promised to provide free visa and free ticket for foreign employment to people in his constituency if he wins the election.
As per the Election (Offences and Punishment) Act, (2007), no person acting on behalf of any political party or candidate or his or her agent or other person shall, in the course of election, influence, in any manner, any candidate or voter or any person with whom any of them has concern or interest in an election. The Act clearly mentions that no candidate can showing gratification or greed or economic benefit in any manner.
As per the Act, those breaching the law could land in jail for two years or get slapped with a fine of Rs 100,000, or both.
The Election Commission has written to the Rautahat District Police to investigate into the case and take necessary action.
Likewise, the Election Commission has also asked Nepal to furnish his clarifications within the next 24 hours.
