Kathmandu: Ambassador of European Union Delegation to Nepal Nona Deprez has shed light on the importance of culture and art to promote peace and diversity worldwide.   The EU envoy was inaugurating the mural painted on the outer wall of the EU office in Lazimpat, Kathmandu on Friday. The mural is part of the EU cultural exchange project, implemented in Nepal through a partnership with Kaalo 101.

“The mural is a unique piece of artwork completed jointly by four European and four Nepali artists. It is a lasting tribute to the EU efforts to promote a culture of tolerance, mutual understanding and cultural exchanges worldwide,” said ambassador Deprez. “This is a living example of culture as a vector of peace and a celebration of diversity.”

The idea behind the month-long EU project was to establish a safe environment for cultural exchanges among European and Nepali artists for learning and creativity with residencies, workshops, a collaborative mural and exhibition.

The first phase of the residency focused on getting to learn and understand the art forms in Nepal and in order to align them with the art forms from Europe. The Nepali artists took the European artists around the city and their studios, highlighted inspirations, showed them murals and explained the physical context of each space in regards to ethnicity, culture and history.
