President calls parties to stake claim to form new government within seven days

As no political parties single-handedly got majority in the recently-concluded polls, President Bhandari has called parties to stake their claim for the post of prime minister as per Article 76 (2).

Kathmandu: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has called political parties in the House of Representatives to form a new government within the next seven days.

Issuing a statement on Sunday, the Office of the President called on parties to stake their claim to the position of the Prime Minister as per Article 76 (2) of the constitution of Nepal by December 25. 

The move from the president comes a few days after the Election Commission submitted the final election results to her.

As no political parties have got majority in the recently-concluded polls, President Bhandari has called parties to stake their claim as per Article 76 (2).

The current ruling coalition of five parties is two seats shy of the majority. The Nepali Congress has secured 89 seats, the Maoist (Center) 32 seats, the Unified Socialist 10 seats, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party four seats, Rastriya Janamorcha one seat. 

Article 76 (2) of the constitution states: “In cases where no party has a clear majority in the House of Representatives pursuant to clause (1), the President shall appoint as the Prime Minister a member of the House of Representatives who is able to command a majority with the support of two or more parties representing to the House of Representatives.”
